HAYWARD, Calif. — Cal State East Bay returned to the win column Friday evening with a four-set victory over Cal State LA, 27-25, 24-26, 25-16, 25-9, at Pioneer Gymnasium.
The opening two sets were tightly contested. East Bay battled through four ties and three lead changes in the first before taking the frame 27-25.
Cal State LA answered in the second, with the teams trading the lead seven times and playing through eight ties. The Golden Eagles edged the Pioneers 26-24 to even the match at one set apiece.
East Bay took control from there.
The Pioneers recorded 14 kills with four errors on 30 attempts in the third, hitting .333 on the way to a 25-16 victory. East Bay was even more efficient in the fourth, finishing with 15 kills and just three errors on 30 attempts for a .400 hitting percentage while closing out the match 25-9.
Lamona Lauhingoa led East Bay with 22 kills on 52 attacks while hitting .269 and added 19 digs for a double-double.
Gianna Navarro reached double figures with 10 kills and added eight digs and four block assists. Natali Herrera finished with nine kills and just two errors on 19 attempts for a .368 hitting percentage.
Pi'ilani Carvalho directed the offense with 43 assists while adding 14 digs and a service ace. Kale'a Kuamo'o recorded 19 digs, while Barakat Adekola added 12 digs, eight kills, a service ace and a solo block.
Carys Fouser contributed three kills while hitting .250 and added two solo blocks and four block assists.
East Bay finished with 54 kills, 52 assists, seven service aces and 84 digs while hitting .188. The Pioneers held Cal State LA to a .013 hitting percentage, including negative percentages in each of the final two sets.
With the victory, Cal State East Bay improves to 3-6 overall and 2-1 in CCAA play.
