East Bay Falls in Doubleheader at Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA, Calif. — Cal State East Bay dropped both games of Friday's doubleheader at Cal Poly Pomona, falling 24-5 in the opener before a 5-1 decision in game two at Scolinos Field.

In the first game, the Pioneers kept pace early before the Broncos broke the game open with a series of big innings.

East Bay struck first in the third when Micah Cervantes delivered an RBI single to score Caleb Chance. After Pomona answered with two runs in the bottom half, Logan Stelling tied the game in the fourth with an RBI double.

The Pioneers briefly moved back in front in the fifth, but the Broncos responded with a five-run inning to take control. Cal Poly Pomona continued to pile on, scoring seven runs in both the sixth and seventh innings before adding three more in the eighth.

Cervantes led the offense with three hits and two RBIs, while Chance added two hits. East Bay finished with 13 hits in the contest.

Jackson Juric took the loss after allowing seven runs over five innings, while AJ Gamboa and Dalen worked in relief.

The second game saw a tighter contest early before Pomona used one big inning to secure the win.

East Bay grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Cervantes singled home a run, but the Broncos answered in the bottom half to tie the game.

Cal Poly Pomona took control in the fourth, scoring four runs behind a pair of home runs and a two-run double to move ahead 5-1.

The Pioneers were limited the rest of the way offensively, finishing with three hits. Cervantes recorded the lone RBI, while Dominick Najar added a hit.

Jaxen McAdara took the loss after allowing five runs over 3.2 innings. Lincoln Juarez provided 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Cal State East Bay continues its CCAA series against Cal Poly Pomona this weekend.
