HAYWARD, Calif. - Cal State East Bay baseball returned to CCAA action on Friday to open a four-game series against (RV) Cal State Monterey Bay. A three-run home run by
Luke Brown made the difference in a 4-3 victory for the Pioneers at Pioneer Baseball Field.
The Otters took an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run by Max Farfan in the top of the second inning.
However, the Pioneers answered in the bottom half of the frame. With Aidan Morton on second base, Jaylen Hodges hit an RBI single to drive in Morton to tie the game at 1-1.
Hodges led off the bottom of the fourth with his second single of the day. He advanced two bases to follow after a sacrifice bunt and a fly ball. Then, Danelle Daniels drew a walk for two Pioneers on base. With the runners on base, Brown launched a three-run home run, giving the Pioneers a 4-1 lead.
Although CSUMB climbed back with a run in the sixth and another run in the eighth, the Pioneers did not allow another run, as a key double play in the top of the ninth set up nicely for East Bay. A flyout to right field closed out the game as the Pioneers took the series opener, 4-3.
Gabe Tanner picked up his third win of the season with 7.1 innings on the mound and Hunter Timothy got his second save of the season with 1.2 scoreless innings of relief pitching.
- Brown's home run was his first of 2025 and fourth of his CSUEB career. He has a team-high 14 RBIs.
- Brown, Morton and Hodges each had two hits on Friday. Morton has multiple hits in three straight games.
- Tanner's performance on the mound included five strikeouts. He has a 1.93 earned run average, second lowest in the CCAA through Friday.
- East Bay's win snaps a 10-game losing streak to the Otters.
