ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - Cal State East Bay opened their 2025 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) campaign with a convincing 7-3 victory over Sonoma State on Friday afternoon at Seawolf Diamond. The Pioneers rode a complete game performance from pitcher
Gabe Tanner and timely hitting to secure the win against the Seawolves.
The Pioneers struck first in the second inning when catcher
Quinn Ayres launched his first home run of the season, giving East Bay a 1-0 lead.
East Bay doubled advantage in the top of the fourth after
Danelle Daniels was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to third on
Luke Brown's single.
Camron Grant then delivered an RBI single to make it 2-0.
Sonoma State briefly took the lead with a three-run outburst in the bottom of the fourth, but the Pioneers quickly responded. In the top of the fifth, Brown drew a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to tie the game, and Grant came through again with his second RBI hit of the day, driving in
Dominick Najar to put East Bay back on top 4-3.
The Pioneers continued to add insurance runs in the later innings.
Gio Martini's RBI double in the seventh extended the lead, while
Jaylen Hodges contributed an RBI single in the ninth. A failed pickoff attempt in the same inning allowed Martini to score, pushing the final margin to 7-3.
Tanner went the distance for Cal State East Bay, allowing six hits over nine innings while striking out 10 to earn his first win of the season.
- Tanner's 10 strikeouts was his Pioneer career high. He has 25 strikeouts on the season in 23 innings of work and had a 1.57 earned run average.
- Grant, Brown and Hodges each had two hits. Grant had two RBIs as well.

Sonoma State: 3-6, 0-1 CCAA

The Pioneers will look to build on their strong start in conference play when they face Sonoma State in a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one is scheduled for 11 a.m., followed by game two at 2 p.m., both at Seawolf Diamond in Rohnert Park, California.
