SAN FRANCISCO - In a CCAA volleyball match on Saturday afternoon, Cal State East Bay put up a valiant effort but ultimately fell to (RV) San Francisco State with a final score of 3-1 (25-9, 16-25, 25-16, 25-21).
After a challenging first set, Cal State East Bay demonstrated their resilience and skill in the second set. The Pioneers stormed out to an early 7-2 lead, setting the tone for an impressive comeback. Although the Gators managed to close the gap, East Bay maintained their composure and found themselves ahead at 16-14.
The turning point came with a crucial block from Lexi Pagani and Fane Paua, igniting a remarkable run. The Pioneers' defense tightened, allowing only two more points for the remainder of the set. Alexandria Gloria finished the set with a kill, securing a 25-16 set win and leveling the match at 1-1.
While San Francisco State claimed the first and third sets, the Pioneers refused to go down without a fight. The fourth set was intense, with East Bay holding a slim 20-19 lead late in the game. However, the Gators found an extra gear, scoring six of the final seven points to clinch the set 25-21 and the match, 3-1.
- Alexandria Gloria and Mia Jordan led the offensive charge with nine kills each.
- Jada Stone set a new personal best with an impressive 21 assists.
- Gloria showcased her defensive prowess as well, leading the team with 20 digs.
- At the net, Fane Paua was a force to be reckoned with, tallying six total blocks.
- For SF State, Tamiya Wilson led the team in kills and digs with 20 and 18 respectively.
Cal State East Bay head coach Kimberly Lambert remained optimistic about her team's performance, stating:
"Although the result was not ideal, we saw a ton of great actions from the team. I'm excited for what's ahead knowing what this group is capable of. SFSU is a talented team that will challenge you pin to pin, really great test that we responded to in the right way."
