HAYWARD, Calif. - Cal State East Bay baseball opened its 2024 CCAA schedule on Friday at Pioneer Baseball Field with a 12-2 victory over Sonoma State.
The Pioneers got the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first with three runs.
Alonzo Guijarro hit a fly ball that was dropped, allowing
Luke Novitske to score the first run of the game. Later in the inning,
Brenden Bell hit a bases loaded infield single for an RBI and
Niko Mollat got an RBI with a bases loaded hit-by-pitch.
Cal State East Bay tacked on five more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Mollat got two more RBIs on a single up the middle, Mollat scored after an error by Sonoma State and
Jaylen Hodges scored as a benefit from an error to give CSUEB an 8-0 lead.
The Seawolves would get a run back in the top of the fourth inning on a solo home run by Mark Hernandez.
Bell single through the left side to drive in
Matthew O'Mahony in the bottom of the fourth for a 9-1 lead. .
In the sixth inning,
Luke Brown singled to drive in Mollat for the Pioneers' 10th run of the day.
Although Sonoma State got another run off a solo home run in the top of the seventh, Brown tripled to right field for an RBI that drove in Mollat and Brown scored on an error after his triple for a 12-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Cal State East Bay finished with a 12-2 win to open CCAA play.
- Gabe Tanner earned the win with 7.0 innings of action, allowing two runs and striking out four.
- Brown, Hodges and Sam Gilliam had three hits each on Friday.
- Brown and Mollat had three RBIs each.
- O'Mahony has a hit in every game this season thus far with a .510 batting average.
- Defensively, the Pioneers turned five double plays.
Cal State East Bay: 9-4, 1-0 CCAA
Sonoma State: 6-7, 1-4 CCAA

Weather permitting, the Pioneers are scheduled to host Sonoma State on Saturday at Pioneer Baseball Field for a CCAA doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for 11 a.m., with game two to follow at 2 p.m.
