Pioneer Women's Basketball Picks Up Second Straight Win on Saturday

HAYWARD, Calif. - Cal State East Bay women's basketball wrapped up its two game homestand on Saturday with a 72-70 overtime victory over Stanislaus State in CCAA action from Pioneer Gymnasium.

GAME SUMMARY

Stanislaus State opened the game on a 14-4 run. Then, the Pioneers would then go on a 12-4 run, capped by a Payton Sterk 3-pointer with 1:57 left in the quarter, to trim the Warriors' lead to 18-16. The Warriors led 22-16 at the end of the first quarter.
 
The Pioneers opened the second quarter with seven unanswered points, capped by a Brooke Donnelly jumper with 7:30 left in the half, to give the Pioneers a 23-22 lead. During the run to start the quarter, Sterk made her 100th career 3-pointer.

Neither team would lead by more than three points for the remainder of the half. The Warriors' three-point lead was at 31-28, after a pair of Joia Armstrong free throws, with 3:59 left in the half. The Pioneers' three-point lead was at 35-32 after a three-point play by Kayla Rosemon with 2:25 left in the half. The Warriors led 39-37 at halftime.
 
In the third quarter, the Warriors would gain their largest lead of the quarter at four, at 41-37, on an Aunika Hornung layup with 8:18 left in the quarter. The Pioneers would then go on a 7-1 run, capped by a Kayla Rosemon layup with 5:06 left in the quarter, to take the lead at 44-42. The Pioneers would gain their largest lead of the quarter at five on two occasions; the second occasion at 52-47 on a Sterk jumper with 1:54 left. The Pioneers led 52-49 after three quarters.
 
The Warriors started the fourth quarter on a 10-2 run, capped by a Talia Maxwell free throw, to take their largest lead of the quarter at 59-54. The Pioneers would then go on an 8-1 run, capped by a pair of Camryn Washington free throws with 1:38 left, to take the lead at 62-60. After a free throw by both teams, Armstrong would hit a jumper in the paint with two seconds left to tie the game at 63-63. Both teams had opportunities for a lead before the end of regulation, but neither scored on those chances as the game went into overtime. 

The Warriors started the extra frame with a 4-0 spurt, but the Pioneers answered with an 8-3 run, capped by a pair of Sterk free throws, to take a 71-70 with 19 seconds left. The Warriors would miss a jumper in the paint with nine seconds left and would subsequently foul Sterk after a defensive rebound. Sterk made one of her awarded free throws for a 72-70 lead. With one more chance for a tie or lead, the Warriors missed the game-tying jumper as the Pioneers won their second game in a row on Saturday.

NOTABLE STATS
  • Sterk scored a game-high 32 points for the Pioneers, going 11-for-21 from the floor and making three free throws. She hit seven 3-pointers which tied the program record for the fourth time in her career. She also reached 100 3-pointers for her career during the game, and by finishing with seven, she sits at 104 for her career. 
  •  Also scoring in double figures for CSUEB was Rosemon with 20 points, which matched a career-high. 
  • Rosemon also had a team-high nine rebounds. 
  • Defensively, Taylor Linzie had two blocks and Sterk had two steals. 
  • Mya Blake scored 23 points for the Warriors. Rosemon scored 20 points in the victory.
  • The Pioneers shot 45.6 percent from the field to the Warriors' 26.8 percent. 
  • Stanislaus State outrebounded Cal State East Bay 50-37. 
  • The Pioneers are 3-1 this season in games that go to overtime.

Next Thursday, February 1, the Pioneers play the first of four straight road games starting with a matchup at Chico State. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. from Art Acker Gymnasium. On January 6, the Pioneers lost 69-55 to the Wildcats in Hayward.
