Pioneer Men's Basketball Forces Overtime, Falls to CSUDH on Saturday

HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay men's basketball forced overtime on a 3-pointer from Chris James with 1.1 seconds remaining in regulation, tying Saturday's CCAA game at 73-73. However, Cal State Dominguez Hills outscored the Pioneers in overtime for an 87-84 victory as CSUEB lost its third straight game.

GAME SUMMARY

The Pioneers jumped out to an early 8-0 lead, but very quickly, the Toros charged back to take a lead of 12-11 at the 12:14 mark of the first half. CSUDH led by as much as 11 points in the first half, but a pair of free throws by Tyree Campbell at the 3:06 mark of the first half started a run of nine unanswered points, capped off by a jumper from Daeshawn Eaton with 30 seconds remaining in the half, as CSUEB trailed 34-32 at halftime.
 
To start the second half, Dimitrios Klonaras tied the game on a layup 44 seconds into the half. Most of the second half was close between both teams, but the Toros led 71-62 with 2:15 left in regulation.
 
A layup by Klonaras at the 2:03 mark sparked an 8-2 run by the Pioneers late in regulation, as they trailed 73-70 with five seconds remaining. A missed free throw from CSUDH with a key rebound from Kevin Ebiriekwe gave the Pioneers one more chance to tie the game.
 
With little time left to score a tying basket, a long inbound pass found Grady Lewis, then he made a quick cross court pass to James, who took a 3-pointer on the right wing and made the tying basket with 1.1 seconds left. CSUDH did not score with the regulation time left as both teams went to overtime even at 73-73.
 
In overtime, the score reached 75-75, then the Toros went on a 9-2 run. CSUEB scored the next five points after a layups by Ebiriekwe and James, along with a free throw by James, brought the Pioneers within two points, trailing 84-82. However, the Toros maintained a lead with a basket and a free throw, and led 87-84 in the closing seconds. The Pioneers had one more chance to score a tying 3-pointer but were unable to capitalize as CSUDH won 87-84.
