ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Cal State East Bay men's basketball played the first of two straight CCAA road games on Thursday. The Seawolves won a tight contest 65-61 over the visiting Pioneers, as Cal State East Bay dropped its fourth straight game.
The Seawolves started the game on a 9-0 run capped by a Julian Bryant three pointer with 17:15 left. The Pioneers answered with a 13-4 run, capped by a
Teiano Hardee fastbreak layup with 11:24 left, tying the game at 13-13. The Seawolves would then go on an 11-2 run, capped by a Pierce Rexford 3-pointer with 6:02 left for a 24-15 lead. The Pioneers ended the half on a 14-8 run, capped by a
Tyree Campbell free throw with 10 seconds left, trimming Sonoma State's lead to 32-29 at halftime.
In the second half, Cal State East Bay opened with 6-2 spurt, capped by a
Grady Lewis layup with 17:44 left, to give the Pioneers the lead at 35-34. On the ensuing possession, Dillon Iwaye gave the Seawolves the lead at 36-35 with 17:30 left. The Seawolves led by as much as 10 points in the second half, but the the Pioneers climbed back to close the deficit to as little as three points, but Sonoma State held on for a 65-61 win on Thursday.
- Lewis had a game high 20 points to lead the Pioneers, going 8-for-10 from the floor with four made free throws. Lewis also led the Pioneers in rebounds with 10 for his fourth double double of the season.
- Also scoring in double figures for CSUEB was Campbell with 12 points.
- Defensively, Lewis had a pair of blocks and Campbell had three steals.
- Andrew Henderson had 15 points to lead Sonoma State in scoring.
- The Pioneers shot 40.7 percent while Sonoma State shot 42.9 percent in field goals.
- Sonoma State had a 39-28 rebounding edge on Thursday.
