RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The final round of the 2023 CCAA Men's Golf Championships took place Wednesday at Victoria Club. Among eight teams, Cal State East Bay placed seventh.
The lowest score among the five entered golfers from CSUEB was from
Easton Hether, who finished at 2-under-par 214 (67-69-78). His 54-hole performance throughout the week included 13 birdies and one eagle.
Wednesday's lowest scorer for the Pioneers was
Xavier Coreno, who carded a 73 in the third round to finish the tournament at even par 216 (73-70-73). Coreno had a team-high 33 even par holes throughout the tournament.
Additional highlights from the tournament's finish for the Pioneers include:
"I'm proud of how our team fought!" stated Cal State East Bay head coach Alan Sue. "We were in a tough position after the first round. Some of our tendencies that we have been working to correct again showed up in stretches. I'm hopeful the [NCAA West Region Selection Committee] weighs our accomplishments over our struggles and ultimately selects the team or a couple of individuals for the [NCAA South Central/West] Regional Championship."
For the first time, Cal State San Marcos won the team title for the CCAA Men's Golf Championship.
Dakota Ochoa from Chico State was the individual champion of the tournament with a final score of 10-under-par 206 (72-66-68).
The Pioneers await the decision if they are selected for an at-large bid for the NCAA West/South Central Regional. The selection announcements are expected to be released no earlier than Friday, April 28. Should the Pioneers (or individual golfers from CSUEB) be selected as a participant for the NCAA West/Couth Central Regional, the tournament takes place May 11-13 from Foxtail Golf Club in Rohnert Park.
