BOULDER CREEK, Nev. – By shooting 2-under on the front and back nine during Tuesday's second round at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championship at Boulder Creek Golf Club — Desert Hawk Coyote Run in Boulder Creek, Nevada,
Peyton Hendricks is 3-under overall through 36 holes and holds a top-15 score entering Wednesday's third round.
The NCAA Division II Championship feature teams competing in 54 holes of stroke play across three 18-hole rounds. Following stroke play, the top teams will advance to medal/match play competition to determine the national champion with individuals also battling for a national crown.
Hendricks enjoyed a white-hot start by birdying four of the first five holes: Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 5 before ending the day with another four birdies within the final six holes. Including his result on No. 13, he finished under par on each of the final three holes to post a 68, the third-lowest total of the day.
With birdies on Nos. 1, 7, 12 and 16,
Cooper Groshart was the other Pioneer who is under par entering the final round of stroke play. By shooting even par on Tuesday, Groshart sits tied for 26th at 2-under.
Paddy Blinderman and
Oscar Blomqvist (T81) each shot 3-over on the afternoon; birdies on Nos. 2, 5, 13 and 16 provided highlights for the former; the latter birdied Nos. 5, 8, 13, 16 and 17 to finish 7-over for the tournament, three shots behind Blinderman who is 4-over after 36 holes and tied for 68th.
Easton Hether (T90) posted a 4-over for the day, birdies on Nos. 3, 5, 11, 15 and 17 helped negate a challenging start to his day.
Cal State East Bay is tied for 15th overall with Western Washington.
The Pioneers advanced to the Championship for the third time in program history and second time in as many seasons; the other appearance took place in 2017.
