SEASIDE, Calif. - Trailing for much of regulation, Cal State East Bay women's basketball made a run in the fourth quarter on Saturday to force overtime, and finish with an 84-76 win against Cal State Monterey Bay in CCAA action from The Kelp Bed.
The Otters opened the game on an 11-4 run capped by a layup by Samiya Terry with 3:52 left. The Pioneers would come as close as five on three occasions; the third occasion at 15-10 on fastbreak jumper by
Taylor Linzie with 2:51 left in the quarter. CSUMB expanded its lead to double digits, at 22-12, on a Terry jumper with 1:17 left. The Otters ultimately led 23-28 after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Otters mainted a lead throughout the quarter, and pulled away to lead by 13 at halftime, 47-34
A double-digit lead was maintained by the Otters for most of the third quarter. Although the lead was as little as nine points, CSUMB led 57-47 going into the final quarter.
To start the fourth quarter, back-to-back 3-pointers for CSUMB extended the lead to 16 points, 63-47 at the 8:50 mark. However, a 3-pointer by
Payton Sterk at the 7:14 mark started a Cal State East Bay run of 13-2. From there, the Otters only scored one more field goal in the quarter, as the lead slowly was relinquished. At the 1:03 mark, Linzie made a steal and assisted on a fastbreak layup by
Camryn Washington to tie the game at 70-70 with under a minute remaining in regulation. Both teams finished regulation with a 70-70 tie.
In overtime, the two teams would trade the lead back and forth early in the extra frame. Trailing 76-72, Sterk hit her third basket from beyond the arc at the 3:06 mark of overtime to trim the CSUMB lead to one. Then after the 3-pointer, Sterk made a steal and drew a foul. Sterk made a pair of free throws to give CSUEB a 77-76 lead as the Pioneers finished the game with the next seven unanswered points for an 84-76 win.
- Leading all scorers for the Pioneers was Washington with a career-high 26 points, going 9-for-14 from the floor and 8-for-12 from the free throw line.
- Linzie reached a double-double for the second time this season, as she scored 16 points and had 11 rebounds. Linzie is averaging 10.7 rebounds a game, which is second highest in the CCAA through Saturday.
- Defensively, Lailah Carey had four steals.
- Jaela Richardson had three blocks and two steals on Saturday. With her three blocks, she leads the CCAA through Saturday's action with 13 on the season.
