SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – At Conlan Center on Tuesday, the Cal State East Bay women's basketball team was unable to keep up with a strong second half by Dominican (Calif.), as the Penguins won a non-conference game, 81-69.
The Pioneers built a lead as large as nine points in the first quarter when
Abigail Cooper made a layup at the 1:04 mark to lead 23-14. Cal State East Bay led 23-17 after the opening quarter.
The lead grew to as much as 11 points in the second quarter, including the 4:13 mark when
Jaela Richardson scored a second-chance layup for a 34-23 lead.
However, the Penguins slowly closed the deficit, to as little as four points late in the half, as CSUEB's lead was 44-40 at halftime.
In the second half, DU limited the Pioneers to only 25 points, and pushed to take a lead with 4:05 left in the third quarter of 53-52. The lead for the Penguins was carried into the fourth quarter, and grew to as much as 14 points, as Dominican finished with an 81-69 win.
- With a double-double that included 21 points and 11 rebounds was Richardson. Richardson went 9-for-13 from the floor and made three free throws.
- Defensively, Richardson had three blocks and a steal.
- Taylor Linzie had a team-high 14 rebounds for the Pioneers.
- The Pioneers shot 45 percent from the floor and 61.9 percent from the free throw line.
- Cal State East Bay had the edge in rebounds 45-39 over the Penguins.
