HAYWARD, Calif. - Cal State East Bay volleyball wrapped up its five match homestand on Thursday with a fifth consecutive CCAA win. The Pioneers swept the visiting Otters, 3-0 (25-22, 30-28, 25-14). It was the third straight three-set victory for Cal State East Bay.
In the first set, the Otters started the set on a 5-2 spurt capped by a Kaylie Honberger kill. The Pioneers would then go on a 6-0 run, capped by a
Fane Paua kill, to take the lead at 8-5. The three point lead was the largest of the set for the Pioneers. The Otters would crawl their way back into the set and would take the lead at 21-20 on a Mikayla Nolte kill. The Pioneers responded to end the set on a 5-1 spurt to win 25-22 and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Extra points were needed to decide a set two winner. The Otters had a set point opportunity at 24-22, but a kill by
Lexi Pagani, followed by an assisted block from
Mia Jordan and
Alexandria Gloria tied the set at 24-24. In the extra points, the Otters had a set point advantage three times, but the Pioneers answered, as the set was pushed to 28-28 after a kill from
Kara Green. Cal State East Bay took the lead on a block from Paua, then completed the set win at 30-28 after an unforced error by the Otters.
In the third set, the Pioneers started on a 15-9 run capped by an assisted block by Pagani and Paua. Cal State East Bay pulled away, and ultimately took the third set, 25-14 after a kill from
Taumafa Tuinauvai, and completed a 3-0 sweep.
- Pagani had 11 kills for the Pioneers along with 13 digs for her ninth double-double of the season (second of the season in three sets).
- Pi'ilani Carvalho had 17 assists for the Pioneers.
- Defensively, Paua finished with seven total blocks to match a season-high.
- Tuinauvai led the Pioneers in digs on Thursday with 17.
