Pioneer Volleyball Prevails in Five Set Thriller at CSUMB for Sixth Straight WIn

Box Score SEASIDE, Calif. - Cal State East Bay volleyball extended its winning streak to six straight matches on Saturday evening at The Kelp Bed with a five-set victory over Cal State Monterey Bay, 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 20-25, 25-21, 15-13).

MATCH SUMMARY

In the first set, the Otters would start on an 11-6 run capped by a Jackie Wahl kill. The Pioneers then responded with a 17-11 run, capped by an assisted block by Alexandria Gloria and Mia Jordan, to take a 23-22 lead. The Pioneers won the first set 25-23 after a kill from Gloria and took a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
The Pioneers and Otters traded points for the first 26 serves of the second set As both teams continued to battle, the Pioneers took a 22-20 lead on a Taumafa Tuinauvai kill, then Otters scored five of the final six points to win the second set 25-23 and tied the match at 1-1.
 
In the third set, the Otters opened with a 20-13 run capped by a kill from Wahl. Although the Pioneers would come to within four at 24-20 on an assisted block by Fane Paua and Tuinauvai, CSUMB took the third set 25-20 and took a 2-1 lead in the match.
 
Trailing 2-1 in sets, the Pioneers opened set three on an 8-1 run capped by an Otters' attack error. While CSUMB battled back to pull within one, 22-21, Cal State East Bay scored the next three points with two Otter attack errors along with a service ace from Tuinauvai, as the Pioneers event the match at 2-2 following a 25-21 set four win. 
 
The deciding set was a battle, as both teams reached 13-13. A kill from Paua set up a match point opportunity for the Pioneers. Closing the match was Megan Crecelius with her fourth kill of the evening as the Pioneers won the final set, 15-13 to win the match, 3-2 extending their winning streak to six in a row.

  • Lexi Pagani had 13 kills for the Pioneers and 20 digs for her 10th double-double of the season. 
  • Paua finished with seven total blocks for a second consecutive match. 
  • With a season-high 29 assists was Pi'ilani Carvalho
