HAYWARD, Calif. – A start to 2023 was not favorable for the Cal State East Bay women's basketball team, who lost a second consecutive game to No. 21 Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday. In the game,
Grace Campbell scored 21 points, her highest single team total with the Pioneers.
The Pioneers jumped out to a nine point lead in the first quarter, but CSUDH came back to cut the deficit to two points. However, jumpers by
Delia Moore and
Kelsey Valencia late in the opening quarter game CSUEB a 22-16 lead through 10 minutes of action.
In the second quarter, the Pioneers led by as much as 14 points with less than a minute until halftime, 39-25 after a layup from
Abigail Cooper. CSUEB took a 39-27 lead into halftime.
The Pioneers extended their lead in the third quarter to as much as 17 points, including the 5:24 mark when Campbell made a 3-pointer for a 48-31 lead. The Toros though responded with an 18-2 run. The quarter though did end with a jumper and a free throw from Campbell as CSUEB led 53-49 going into the final quarter.
It was the 5:23 mark of the fourth quarter where CSUDH caught up to tie the game, at 59-59. With 4:10 left, the Toros took a lead on a free throw, and didn't look back as they finished with a 73-65 win to remain unbeaten on the season.
- Campbell scored her Cal State East Bay career high 21 points, going 8-for-16 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the free throw line.
- Jaela Richardson had a team-high eight rebounds.
- Defensively, Richardson had three blocks and three steals.
- As a team, the Pioneers went 24-for-66 from the floor and 11-for-19 in free throws.
- For the Toros, Dawnyel scored 20 points and had 12 rebounds for a double-double.
