SILVER CITY, N.M. - The 2022 season for the Cal State East Bay women's volleyball team opened on Friday in the Green Chile Classic. Of two matches played by the Pioneers at Drag's Court, the second went in their favor to split Friday's pair. In the opening match, Cal State East Bay came up short, falling 3-2 to Holy Names. However, the Pioneers responded well with a 3-1 victory over host team, Western New Mexico.
Holy Names 3, Cal State East Bay 2 (25-19, 21-25, 17-25, 25-23, 15-9)
Despite leading in kills, blocks and digs for the entire match, Cal State East Bay came up short in a tight battle. The Hawks took the opening set, followed by the next two going in favor of the Pioneers. The fourth set was closely contested but went to the Hawks to force a deciding set. In the final set, the Hawks pulled away from an 8-7 lead to go on a 7-2 run to win the match.
Notable stats from the opening match include
Mia Jordan's 14 kills, a double-double for
Kara Green (13 kills, 10 digs) and 26 assists each from
Megan Crecelius and Julanne Tan.
Taylor Miche had a team-high of 12 digs.
Cal State East Bay 3, Western New Mexico 1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-19, 25-18)
After splitting the first two sets, the Pioneers took control of the remainder of the match for a 3-1 victory. The team combined for a .339 attack percentage, had 12 service aces and was outstanding defensively with eight blocks and 47 digs.
Jordan repeated her kill total with 14 in Friday's second match,
Karis Carter had six total blocks, and with 10 kills each was
Lexi Pagani and
Kara Green.

It will be a quick turnaround for the Pioneers as they return to Drag's Court on Saturday morning for a match scheduled for a 10 a.m. MT (9 a.m. PT) start against Fort Lewis. Later in the day, at 4 p.m. MT (3 p.m. Pacific), the final match of the tournament for Cal State East Bay takes place against Wisconsin-Parkside.
