SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Pioneers split a CCAA doubleheader at Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday. The Pioneers lost game one, 15-9 but bounced back and won game two 6-4. Francisco Pedraza had four home runs throughout the day for the Pioneers.
Game One – Cal State San Bernardino 15, Cal State East Bay 9
The Coyotes took an early 6-0 lead in the first inning, but in the second inning, the Pioneers got on the scoreboard with an RBI single by Jacob Froess to drive in Manny Garcia.
After falling behind, the closest Cal State East Bay cut the deficit to was in the top of the third inning. That's when Essex Brown Jr. hit an RBI infield single and Matthew O'Mahony drove in a pair of runs on two-run double, as CSUSB led 7-4.
The Coyotes added six runs for a 13-4 lead through six innings.
The final seven runs of the game betwwen both teams were results of home runs. For the Pioneers, Pedraza and Brown Jr. each had a solo shot in the top of the seventh, and in the top of the eighth, Pedraza launched a three-run home run. However, the Coyotes won 15-9.
Pedraza led the Pioneers' offense going 4-for-5 with four RBIs, two home runs and three runs scored.
Game Two – CSU East Bay 6, CSU San Bernardino 4 (7 innings)
Pedraza continued his home run tear with a solo shot in the top of the first inning to give CSUEB a 1-0 lead.
Although CSUSB responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, Pedraza answered with his second solo home run of the game in the top of the third which was fourth of the day and 15th of the season to even the game at 2-2.
CSUSB scored the next two runs of the game, but another home run for the Pioneers evened the game. The game tying home run was off the bat of O'Mahony - a two-run shot in the top of the sixth.
The tie was broken in the top of the seventh when Brown Jr. hit a double to left field that drove in Jacob Klinovsky and Cole anderson for a 6-4 lead.
Ethan Brodsky entered the game with a save opportunity in the bottom of the seventh and struck out the first two batters faced and finished with a groundout to close the game for his third save of the season.
Mark Woinarowicz picked up seventh win of the season with 6.0 innings pitched with five strikeouts.
Pedraza led the Pioneers offensively going 2-for-3 with two solo home runs.
Through Saturday's CCAA action, the Pioneers are tied for the sixth spot in the standings with Sonoma State. Five games remain for Cal State East Bay and Sonoma State.
The Pioneers and Coyotes will finish their series Sunday at 11 a.m. from Fiscalini Field.
