Pioneer Softball Returns to CCAA Action with a Series at Chico State

Overview

Cal State East Bay will travel to Chico to take on #25 Chico State University in CCAA play. The Pioneers are coming off a successful weekend as they won three of five at the Tournament of Champions in Turlock while the Wildcats won two out of three at the Tournament of Champions.

Three Players to Watch

Ysabella Cortez – The freshman from Carson, California is averaging .275 on the season with 19 hits and 12 runs scored. 

Abby Greer – The senior pitcher from Beaverton, Oregon set the Pioneers' career strikeout record during the Pioneers' victory over Biola University. She has a 3.36 ERA with 78 strikeouts on the season.

Gabriela Rivera – The freshman from Sacramento, California is averaging .253 on the season and is tied for fifth on the team in RBIs (11).

Last Series

The Pioneers traveled to Turlock to take part in the Tournament of Champions hosted by Stanislaus State in Turlock. On Friday, the Pioneers split their two games defeating Chaminade, 2-1 and lost 3-2 to Academy of Art. On Saturday, the Pioneers won both of their games including a 5-2 victory over Montana State-Billings and 2-1 win over Biola University. On Sunday, the Pioneers fell to Central Washington University, 5-1 in their final game of the tournament. Sarah Fukushima was named to the All-Tournament Team. 

Around the CCAA

The Pioneers hold a .150 winning percentage lead over San Francisco State for the sixth seed in the CCAA playoffs. No. 8 Cal State San Marcos holds a commanding .250 winning percentage lead over Chico State for the top seed. The Cougars will play a non-conference doubleheader against No. 2 Concordia (Calif.).
