Two Top-5 Finishes for Pioneers Highlight Performance at RJGA Palm Valley Classic

GOODYEAR, Ariz. - On Saturday, the final round of the RJGA Palm Valley Classic wrapped up at Palm Valley Golf Club. While the Cal State East Bay women's gol team placed third among 28 teams, two Pioneers placed in the top-5 of the individual leaderboard. Jasmin Krishna was tied or second place at 1-under-par 143 and Drishti Karumbaya was tied for fifth at 1-over-par 145. 

In the first round on Friday, Krishna led the Pioneers with a 1-under-par 71 which put her solely in sixth place. Karumbaya fired an even par 72 which tied her for seventh along with Ana Valeria Enriquez of Western New Mexico , Madison Gridley of Northwest Nazarene, Zoe Offield of CSU Monterey Bay, Kaylee Petersen of Northeastern State and Morgan Sjoerdsma of Cal State LA. Arrianna Custodio shot a 4-over-par 76 which tied her for 35th place along with 13 other golfers. Caroline Berge fired a 6-over-par 78 which tied her for 62nd place along with 11 other golfers. Sachika Singh rounded out the Pioneers' contingent with 7-over-par 79 which tied her for 74th place along with nine other golfers.

In the second round on Saturday, Krishna fired an even par 72 which gave her a tournament score of 1-under-par 143. The score was good enough for a second place tie with Gam Songprasert of West Texas A&M. Karumbaya carded a 73 for a tournament score of 1-over-par 145. The score placed her in a tie for fifth place along with Petersen and Iona Roska of Cameron. Custodio had the best second round score for the Pioneers as she shot a 1-under-par 71 for a tournament score of 147. The score tied her for 15th place along with Marybeth Bellnap of Northeastern State and Ashley Davis of Cameron. 

Faith Kilgore of Colorado Christian University won the individual title. Northwestern State won the team competition while CSU East Bay finished in third place.

Cal State East Bay head coach Alan Sue spoke about the team's performance. "The team adjusted well to the heat and the speed of the greens," said Sue. "We needed a strong finish to keep our hopes alive for earning a selection into the Regional Championship and that's exactly what they did."

On Monday, the Pioneers will play in the first round of their final regular season tournament, the SSU Women's Spring Invitational, which will be held at Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club with the opening round on Monday, followed by the second round on Tuesday.
