BROOKS, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay men's golf team finished the CCAA Championship on Wednesday in fifth place. The tournament was held in Brooks, California at the Yocha Dehe Golf Club.
Fraser Owenson and Quentyn Kowata both shot a 1-under-par 71 in the final round. Owenson finished the tournament tied for seventh with a tournament score of 5-over-par. Kowata tied for 15th with a 10-over-par 223.
Xavier Coreno and Ananjan Kaushik finished their third rounds with a 1-over-par 73. Coreno tied for 16th with a 11-over-par 224 and Kaushik tied for 22nd with a tournament score of 13-over-par 226. Coreno had the most birdies among the Pioneers with nine.
Tommy Jernigan finished the tournament at 24-over-par 237 and had one eagle throughout the tournament.
"The conditions in the first round were extreme and we didn't handle it as well as we would have liked," said CSUEB assistant coach Chris Oetinger. "However, the guys adjusted their mindset and bounced back strong putting up the lowest combined total for the final two rounds. I'm very proud of the way they fought back. We now have to wait and see if we did enough to earn a spot into the [NCAA Division II Men's Golf West/South Central Regional Championship]."
Matthew Pennington of Cal State San Marcos won the individual title. Sonoma State won the team competition while CSU East Bay finished in fifth place.
The Pioneers will now wait to see if they are selected for the 2022 NCAA Division II Men's Golf West/South Central Regional Championship.
