HAYWARD, Calif. – Freshman
Tommy Scavone struck out 11 a season-high 11 batters en route to a complete-game victory, as the Cal State East Bay baseball team took the series opener Friday afternoon against Sonoma State, 4-3.
Scavone held the Seawolves scoreless in the final five innings, as the freshman pitched all nine innings to improve to 2-2 on the season and lift the Pioneers' record to 9-6 and 2-3 in conference play. Scavone had 11 strikeouts and only two earned runs allowed.
A pair of solo home runs in the bottom of the second inning opened the scoring for the Pioneers.
Matthew O'Mahony led off with his second home run of the season. Also in the inning,
Francisco Pedraza knocked his third home run of the season, as CSUEB led 2-0.
Sonoma State answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning and would take a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth with a solo home run from Braeden Holliday.
However, the Pioneers tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double from
Ryan Maciel, which drove in
Luke Novitske.
Manny Garcia hit an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth to give CSUEB a 4-3 lead,
Samuel Esparza scored the go-ahead run.
Maciel went 2-for-2 at the plate with two doubles while reaching base three times.
The Pioneers and Seawolves return to action on Saturday for a CCAA doubleheader from Pioneer Baseball Field. First pitch for game one is set for 11 a.m., followed by game two at 2 p.m.
