HAYWARD, Calif. – On Saturday, the Cal State East Bay baseball team completed a non-conference series sweep of Simpson (Calif.) at Pioneer Field with a 10-2 victory. The first two batters in the Pioneers' lineup,
Essex Brown Jr. and
Manny Garcia, combined to go 5-for-8 in the game with six RBIs total.
After trailing 1-0 in the third, the Pioneers answered with a solo home run by Brown, which was his first of the season to even the score at 1-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, three consecutive walks were issued to the Pioneers to load the bases, and after the RedHawks changed pitchers, a wild pitch allowed
Tommy Scavone to score the go-ahead run for a 2-1 lead.
With the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning,
Luke Novitske led off by reaching on an error, and
Ryan Maciel reached on a bunt single. Scavone hit his first triple with CSUEB to drive in both runners, extending the Pioneers' lead to 4-1. Later in the inning, Brown drew a walk, then stole second, putting two runners in scoring position. CSUEB capitalized as Garcia singled to drive in Scavone and Brown for a 6-1 lead.
The Pioneers added four more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Francisco Pedraza hit an RBI double to drive in Novitske, and Brown singled to drive in two runs. Capping off the the scoring for CSUEB in the inning was an RBI single hit by Garcia, as
Donovan Bailey scored, extending the lead to 10-1.
Although Simpson scored a run in the top of the eighth inning on a wild pitch, the combined relief pitching for the Pioneers, including
Adrian Padilla and
Anthony Perez, retired the final five batters faced to complete a 10-2 win for a three-game sweep of the RedHawks.
Brown, in the leadoff spot for the Pioneers, went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and scored two runs. Second in the lineup on Saturday was Garcia, who went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
On the mound, starting pitcher
Mark Woinarowicz improved to 3-0 on the season, working 7.0 innings allowing one run with six strikeouts. Through Saturday, he has a 2.50 ERA with 18 innings pitched on the season.
CSUEB (7-3) looks to start CCAA competition strong this coming Friday, Feb. 25, with the first game of a four-game conference series at Cal State Monterey Bay. First pitch from Otter Sports Complex is scheduled for 6 p.m. The game will be the first CCAA contest for the Pioneers since March 2020.
