ALAMEDA, Calif. — The Cal State East Bay baseball team had its biggest offensive output of the season on Saturday, defeating Holy Names in Game 1 of a doubleheader, 13-10, before dropping the series finale against the Hawks, 4-3.
Francisco Pedraza went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, third baseman
Luke Novitske finished 2-for-5 with three RBI and center fielder
Essex Brown, Jr. had two RBI and scored two runs in the early victory.
East Bay raced out to a 10-1 lead, which was more than enough run support for starting pitcher
Mark Woinarowicz. The junior from Yorba Linda earned his second win of the season, allowing three earned runs while striking out six in five innings pitched.
The Pioneers fell short in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader despite a solid pitching performance from
Tommy Scavone. The freshman from Livermore allowed three earned runs in six innings pitched.
Brown Jr. went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while
Matthew Mandeville had a game-tying RBI single to make it 3-3 in the top of the seventh. Holy Names won it in the bottom half of the seventh on an RBI single.
CSUEB (4-3) returns to action next week with home games against Simpson University beginning on Friday, Feb. 18, beginning at 11 a.m.
