Late Free Throw From Campbell Completes Pioneers' Comeback on Friday

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – After trailing by as much as 11 points, a comeback in the second half brought the Cal State East Bay women's basketball team back in the game, and with less than a second left in regulation with a 50-50 tie, Grace Campbell made a free throw that became a game winner, as the Pioneers defeated Cal State San Bernardino 51-50 in a CCAA matchup Friday evening at The Den.

GAME SUMMARY
 
Shooting only 20 percent from the floor in the first half, Cal State East Bay trailed 30-21 at halftime to the Coyotes. CSUSB led by as much as 11 points in the first half, specifically at the 6:10 mark of the second quarter. While the Pioneers cut the deficit to four points at the 3:39 mark of the quarter after a 3-pointer from Campbell, the Coyotes took a nine point lead into the halftime break. 
 
A 13-4 run by Cal State East Bay to open the third quarter led to a 34-34 tie, as Kayla Rosemon made a pair of free throws at the 2:36 mark. Less than a minute remained in the third quarter when the Pioneers took their first lead of the game on a layup from Rosemon for a 39-37 lead. Although a pair of free throws evened the game for CSUSB, Abigail Cooper made a layup to close out the third quarter, as the Pioneers led 41-39 going into the fourth quarter. 
 
The Coyotes scored the first basket of the fourth quarter, then took a 44-41 lead. While CSUEB kept the game close for much of the quarter, they trailed until the 2:44 mark when Rosemon made a pair of free throws to tie the game at 50-50. 
 
The game became a defensive struggle for both teams down the stretch, but with 0.7 seconds left, Campbell drew a foul. She made the second of a pair of free throws, and after the Coyotes inbounded, the clock shortly thereafter expired, as the Pioneers finished with a 51-50 comeback win.

NOTABLE STATS
 
  • Campbell finished 4-for-10 from the floor and 4-for-6 from the free throw line for 14 points. She also had a team-high nine rebounds. 
  • Jaela Richardson led all scorers with 16 points, going 7-for-15 from the floor with a pair of free throws. 
  • As a team, the Pioneers finished 16-for-60 from the floor and 17-for-23 in free throws.
  • Rosemon made seven free throws. 
  • For the Coyotes, Mia Dufresne had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
