HAYWARD, Calif. – The home opener for the Cal State East Bay women's basketball team took place Thursday evening, which was also the first CCAA game for the Pioneers in 2022-23. In a defensive battle, the Pioneers won 56-51.
A low scoring first quarter was won by the Pioneers.
Grace Campbell made a jumper with just 21 seconds left in the quarter to give the Pioneers a 10-9 win.
As the first five points of the second quarter helped CSUEB pull away from the Seawolves, the Pioneers took a 24-16 lead into halftime after
Jaela Richardson made a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Although the Pioneers led by as much as 11 points in the third quarter, the Seawolves battled back and led 42-40 going into the final quarter.
Payton Sterk scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to give the lead back to the Pioneers. While Sonoma State kept the game close in the quarter, Cal State East Bay prevailed with a 56-51 win to open conference play
- Campbell led the Pioneers in scoring with 13 points, going 5-for-16 from the floor and 3-for-5 from the free throw line.
- Matching a career high in rebounds with 14 was Taylor Linzie.
- Defensively, Linzie had four steals and Richardson had four blocks.

Jenny Thigpin spoke following the game:
"We relied on our [defense] tonight. It carried us on a night where we did not shoot the ball well. Overall it was nice to win our home opener as we look to gain momentum forward."

The Pioneers return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Cal Poly Humboldt in a CCAA matchup. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. from Pioneer Gymnasium. Guests who bring a new, unwrapped toy to donate can receive free admission. Donations go to the toy drive sponsored by Hayward Fire Department.
