TURLOCK, Calif. – A strong second quarter and a dominant fourth quarter made all the difference for the Cal State East Bay women's basketball team on Friday for a 64-47 win over Academy of Art in the Warrior Classic.
The first quarter finished even at 13-13, but the second quarter was filled with several small runs by the Pioneers. They built a lead, which grew to as much as 10 points, and ultimately finished as an 11-point lead at halftime when
Taylor Linzie hit a jumper at the buzzer to take the game into the break with Cal State East Bay leading 36-25.
Cal State East Bay's lead dwindled to two points on a couple of occasions in the third quarter, with one as late as recent as the 5:08 mark. While the Pioneers were outscored 16-10 in the third, they led 46-41 going into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Pioneers took control, scoring the first 12 points of the quarter. It was not until the 3:15 mark when ART U answered with any points. With the early run in the quarter, the Urban Knights were held to six points, as Cal State East Bay went on to a 64-47 victory on Friday.
- Grace Campbell led the Pioneers in scoring with 15 points, which was the most for her during her career at CSUEB. She went 7-for-18 from the floor and made one free throw.
- Also scoring in double figures for the Pioneers was Jaela Richardson with 12 points.
- Linzie scored seven points, had a team-high eight rebounds and had two blocks and a steal.
- Delia Moore, Kelsey Valencia and Michaella Dean had three steals each.
- The Pioneers as a team had 15 steals.
- From the floor, Cal State East Bay went 27-for-65 while Academy of Art went 18-for-53.
- The battle on the boards went in favor of the Pioneers, 44-31.
- For the Urban Knights, Jadence Clifton led all scorers with 17 points.
