Pioneers Dominate in Saturday’s Win

TURLOCK, Calif. – In dominating fashion at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena, the Cal State East Bay women's basketball team defeated Holy Names, 85-46 in the Warrior Classic. With two strong wins, there were two from the Pioneers honored by being named to the All-Tournament Team – Jaela Richardson and Payton Sterk.

GAME SUMMARY
 
As the Pioneers scored the game's first 13 points, Richardson and Sterk accounted for 11 of them. The first quarter was all Cal State East Bay, building as much as an 18-point lead. Through the opening 10 minutes, CSUEB led 24-10. 
 
The lead only grew in the second quarter to 21 points by halftime, which is where Cal State East Bay took a 48-27 lead into the break. 
 
After two quarters, the Pioneers went 19-for-35 in the first half and 5-for-6 from the free throw line. 
 
In the second half, the Pioneers cruised to an 85-46 win.

NOTABLE STATS
 
  • Sterk led all scorers with 18 points, going 7-for-15 from the floor, including four 3-pointers. 
  • Throughout the tournament to earn All-Tournament honors, Sterk scored 21 points and had nine rebounds in a two-game stretch. 
  • Richardson had 11 points and finished with 23 throughout the tournament. 
  • Off the bench, in just 15 minutes of action, Michaella Dean had 12 rebounds.
  • Delia Moore had four assists. 
  • Cal State East Bay outrebounded the Hawks, 49-25. 
  • Bench scoring for the Pioneers totaled 38 points.  
  • As a whole, the Pioneers shot 48.5 percent from the floor and 71.4 percent from the free throw line. 
  • Leading the Hawks in scoring with 11 points was Jayden Benitez.

Cal State East Bay head coach Jenny Thigpin spoke about Saturday's performance for the Pioneers. 
"Proud of the kids putting to back-to-back wins together. They came out ready to play and were able to sustain the tempo with our defensive pressure. We had some great production off the bench with 38 points."

The Pioneers play one more non-conference game before CCAA action begins next week. They play on the road Tuesday at Dominican. Tipoff from Conlan Center in San Rafael is set for 5:30 p.m. Cal State East Bay has won the last eight matchups against the Penguins.
