Pioneers Place 6th at Nick Turner Invitational

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Cal State East Bay women's golf team finished in sixth place as a team among 15 at the Nick Turner Invitational this week at Arroyo Del Oso Golf Course. Individually, Drishti Karumbaya and Julika Grosspietsch placed in the top-20 on the leaderboard. 

Here are the highlights from the Pioneers throughout the tournament. 
  • Karumbaya finished in a ninth place tie at 4-over-par 148. among 36 holes played, Karumbaya made even par on 28 of them as her 28 even par holes were the most among the entire field. 
  • Grosspietsch had 27 even par holes and finished 7-over-par 151 in a 17th place tie. 
  • Mandi Granato had a team-high four birdies throughout the tournament. 
"The ladies did a great job in round one and put us in a competitive position for day two," stated Cal State East Bay assistant coach Chris Oetinger. "Unfortunately, we got off to a rough a start today and struggled to right the ship. This team has so much talent and potential. We are very close to putting it all together. It's just a matter of time."

St. Mary's (Texas) was the team champion of the Nick Turner Invitational. Individually, Sydney Williams from Arkansas-Fort Smith and Caroline Wales from Cal State San Marcos finished 36 holes tied at 1-over-par 145. A five-hole playoff between Williams and Wales went in favor of Williams for the tournament championship. 

Cal State East Bay's final two tournaments of the 2022 fall season take place in Hawaii next week. Form October 25-26, the Pioneers will compete in the Southwest Airlines HPU Sharks Shootout, taking place at Pearl Country Club in Aiea, Hawaii. On October 28-29, CSUEB will compete in the Dennis Rose Invitational at Hapuna Golf Course in Kohala Coast, Hawaii.
