Pios Show Resilience in Home Defeat vs. Stan State

HAYWARD, Calif. — The Cal State East Bay volleyball team fell short in a home conference match against Stanislaus State, 3-0, (25-19, 25-17, 25-23), on Thursday evening at Pioneer Gym.

CSUEB (5-8, 0-5 CCAA) was led by 10 kills from junior Breyan Ashley, while freshman setter Peyton Griffin finished with 15 assists and redshirt freshman libero Chloe Ortega had 12 digs.

In a show of resilience, the Pioneers played their best in the third set despite dropping the first two sets and finding themselves behind 2-0.

Trailing 11-4 in the third set, East Bay responded with a run to pull within 12-9. After Stan State scored six-straight points to make it 17-9, the Pioneers came back with a furious rally to knot the score, 19-19, on a kill by freshman Alexandria Gloria

A spike by Ashley off an assist from freshman Julianne Tan again tied the score at 21-21, before Stanislaus State pulled regained control late and held on for the narrow match-clinching win, 25-23.

Cal State East Bay continues its homestand on Saturday, Oct. 2, as it plays host to Chico State beginning at 7 p.m..
