HAYWARD, Calif. — The Cal State East Bay volleyball team got off to a strong start and held on late to defeat Chico State, 3-1 (25-18, 25-15, 18-25, 25-23), to pick up its first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) victory on Saturday night at Pioneer Gym.
CSUEB (6-8, 1-5 CCAA) won for the fourth time in its last six contests against Chico State (5-9, 1-5) and five of the last seven meetings with the Wildcats at Pioneer Gym.
Freshman
Alexandria Gloria led the way with a team-high 15 kills to go along with nine digs, junior
Breyan Ashley recorded a season-high six blocks with 10 kills and redshirt freshman setter
Megan Crecelius finished with 36 assists.
The Pioneers controlled the first two sets to open up Saturday's match, and later showed an ability to respond when the momentum was against them.
After Chico State pulled out a victory in the third set, East Bay found itself trailing in the fourth until a late 7-1 flurry help seal the match-clinching win.
A kill by Gloria started it off by pulling the Pioneers within three, and senior
Steena Hubbard's shot cut the deficit to 22-21. An ace by Hubbard broke a 23-23 tie, and a block by Ashley clinched the two-point set victory and the match.
CSUEB continues its homestand on Thursday, Oct. 7, as the Pioneer play host to Sonoma State beginning at 7 p.m.
