Pioneers Unable to Knock Off Undefeated Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA, Calif. — The Cal State East Bay volleyball team put up a valiant effort on Saturday afternoon, but it wasn't enough upend a undefeated, nationally ranked opponent in its home gym.

The Pioneers fell short in a road contest against No. 24-ranked Cal Poly Pomona, 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-22) at Kellogg Arena.

Freshman Alexandria Gloria led CSUEB with 10 kills and two blocks, junior Kara Green added six kills with five digs, junior Breyan Ashley finished with nine kills and freshman setter Peyton Griffin tallied 21 assists.

Despite dropping the first set and falling behind 3-0 in the second, the Pioneers came back strong and eventually took a 9-7 advantage after a kill by Karis Carter. However, a late run by Cal Poly Pomona (11-0, 4-0 CCAA) took control of the second set before going on to win.

But although they dropped first two sets, the Pioneers came out hot in the third and quickly led 3-0. A kill by Ashley helped East Bay stay close at 22-21 before the Broncos held on late to remain undefeated on the season.

CSUEB (5-7, 0-4) returns home next week to resume conference play against Stanislaus State on Thursday, Sept. 30, beginning at 5 p.m.
