HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team opened the first day of action in the Hawaii Challenge by splitting a pair of matches against Montana State, Billings a Hawaii Hilo. CSUEB defeated MSUB 3-2 in their afternoon game before completing the day with a 3-0 loss to UHH.
With the split, the Pioneers move to 4-2 on the season including a 2-1 mark in neutral site games. The Pioneers played their first five set match of the season in their 3-2 victory over the Yellowjackets (15-25, 25-18, 25-18, 23-25, 15-10).
Several Pioneers set new career bests in the opening match. East Bay was led by
Breyan Ashley as she tallied her second double-double of the season finishing with a team high 16 kills to go along with 14 digs. Ashley added three aces and three blocks as she racked up 20.5 total points.
Mia Jordan turned in a career best 12 kills, second best on the team for the match.
Kara Green fell just two kills shy of a double-double compiling 12 digs and eight kills.
Chloe Ortega paced CSUEB with a 17 digs, a new career high mark for her. Freshman
Peyton Griffin erupted with a career high 33 assists to go with seven digs and three kills.
Alexandria Gloria and
Steena Hubbard turned in well-rounded performances as Gloria tallied six kills, four aces, four digs and two assists. Hubbard added four aces, four blocks and three kills.
In the final game of the night, the Pioneers fell in straight sets to the Hawaii Hilo Vulcans (18-25, 31-29, 18-25). Despite the loss,
Breyan Ashley notched her third consecutive double-double with 12 digs and 10 kills.
Kara Green and
Chloe Ortega both led the squad with 16 digs apiece. Green added seven kills and a block while Ortega added two assists and a kill.
Peyton Griffin finished the match with 17 assists, three kills and two digs.
Megan Crecelius chipped in 11 assists, three digs, a kill and an ace.
Taumafa Tuinauvai compiled six digs and three kills while
Mia Jordan finished with seven kills.
The Pioneers with continue play in the Hawaii Challenge with a match against Saint Martin's at 1:00 pm (PST) and a night game against host school Chaminade at 10:00 pm (PST). Both games well have live stats and live video.
