HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay men's and women's golf teams were back in full swing as competed in the Nighthawks Invitational. The two-day tournament hosted by Northwest Nazarene University at the Poppy Ridge Golf Course in nearby Livermore was the first athletic event for both teams for the 2020-21 season.
The men's team claimed a third overall finish as they shot a collective 612 through the two days. East Bay shot 307 as a team during Monday's round and improved by two strokes to shoot 305 during Tuesday's final round.
Reigning CCAA Freshman & CSUEB Freshman of the Year
Moses Greene notched a team best seventh place overall finish as he scored 75 on both days of the event. For Greene this was his third career top 10 finish.
Ryan Hong, who also enjoyed a strong freshman campaign in 2019-20, finished just one stroke behind Greene shooting a 151 and tying for eighth place overall. Hong put together CSUEB's best showing on Monday after scoring 74. Hong now has two top 10 career finishes.
Fellow sophomore
Fraser Owenson also played well as he corralled his second career top 20 finish after scoring 153 through two days. Owenson shot an 78 on Monday and improved by three strokes to shot a 75 in the final round.
Xavier Coreno played well in his first career tournament as a Pioneer shooting 159, which tied for 36th overall. Coreno, a transfer from Reedly College improved his individual score to 78 after scoring 81 on Monday.
Tommy Jernigan, a transfer from Cal State San Marcos also put together a solid showing in his first event at East Bay, scoring a total of 165 and finishing tied for 58th overall.
On the women's side,
Alexis Esgeurra and
Arrianna Custodio both represented Cal State East Bay well on the green. Both Esgeurra and Custodio played as individuals and were the lone two Pioneer student-athletes to participate in the tournament.
Esgeurra shot a 161 overall and finished tied for tenth overall. She shot an 82 on Monday and improved three strokes to shot a 79 on Tuesday's final round. For Esgeurra, this was her first ever top 10 finish as Pioneer.
Arrianna Custodio participated in her first career tournament as a Pioneer and claimed a top 20 finish as she placed tied for 17th with a score of 164. Custodio, a transfer from Sacramento City College, shot an 82 both days of the event.
The men's team will return to action next week for a tournament hosted by Holy Names at Corica Park South Course in Alameda. The women's team will be off for a couple weeks until they return to the green for an event hosted by Academy of Art at Silverado Resort & Spa in Napa.
