ROCKLIN, Calif. — The Cal State East Bay men's and women's cross country teams performed well despite running in excessive heat for the second-consecutive week, competing in the Sacramento State Invitational on Friday morning at Johnson-Springview Park.
The Pioneer men earned a fifth-place finish with 123 points, finishing just behind fourth-place Academy of Art (112) and ahead of Division-I opponents host Sacramento State (125) and San Jose State (175).
Meanwhile, the East Bay women's team placed sixth with 149 points to finish ahead of Division-I opponents San Jose State (178) and Fresno State (198).
The CSUEB men's team was led in Friday's 8K run by
John Robert Bradshaw's 16th-place finish behind a time of 25-minutes, 46.8-seconds.
Senior
Jeremy Shaw placed 20th overall after crossing the finish line in 25:56.8, freshman
Dylan Shubert took 26th with a time of 26:43.7 and fellow freshman
Aidan Singh was right behind in 27th place in 26:46.3.
"John Robert and Shaw ran the way they're supposed to run. I'm proud of them," said East Bay head coach
Tony Nicolosi. "They've been working so hard. They've had amazing training and it just hasn't clicked, but today it clicked. I'm happy for them."
For the Pioneer women, junior
Amanda Navarro paced East Bay in the 6K with a 23rd-place finish behind a time of 22:41.6.
Junior
Chase Worthen continued her strong start to the season after placing 25th at 22:45.0, junior
Leza Cassidy was 29th with a mark of 22:57.1 and freshman
Kimberly Lima took 34th after crossing the finish line in 23:26.7.
"Navarro did great," said Nicolosi. "I think she's one of the better runners in West Region.
"The pandemic was tough on her. She's figuring out how to be great again, and I think she's close. Today was a reflection of that."
Cal State East Bay returns to action in two weeks at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational on Oct. 16.
