HAYWARD, Calif. — The Fall Semester of Intercollegiate Athletics has been suspended at Cal State East Bay and throughout the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), it was announced on Tuesday.
In addition, California State University Chancellor Timothy White announced Tuesday that canceled all in-person classes in the fall, and continues instruction online due to COVID-19.Â
Â
"All of us in Pioneer Athletics are saddened by today's announcement regarding the suspension of intercollegiate competition this fall," said Cal State East Bay Director of Athletics
Jason Carmichael. "We understand the value of competition for our student-athletes fully. However, we also place a high value on the well-being of our students, and as such, today's announcement seems to be the best decision in light of the information we have at this time.Â
Â
"We have turned our collective energy now towards managing the immediate needs of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff. There are many more questions than answers at this time, but we are making great efforts to develop solutions for the short and long term. Over the coming days, we will continue to work in concert with campus and system leadership as well as our colleagues at other CSU campuses to evaluate the options we have for optimizing the situation for our student-athletes. When the time is appropriate over the next few days we will provide additional information."Â
Â
The university released a statement on Tuesday stating, "Cal State East Bay will continue to follow guidance from public health, governing officials and partnership organizations as we decide what is best for our students and campus visitors in terms of postponed or reduced attendance gatherings and activities. We anticipate that the California Collegiate Athletics Association will provide a brief update this afternoon regarding the cancellation of the fall athletics season, with additional details to follow."Â
In addition, Chico State University President and CCAA Chair of the Board Dr. Gayle Hutchinson released a statement on Tuesday afternoon saying, "Based on Chancellor White's May 12th announcement that the vast majority of CSU courses will be virtual for the fall semester of the 2020-21 academic year, and with utmost consideration for the health and welfare of our students, coaches, staff, faculty and communities, CCAA member institutions have determined that NCAA sport competition will not occur during the fall of 2020.
"The CCAA member institutions will continue to advocate strongly to maintain NCAA championship opportunities for all of our student-athletes, including our fall sports, during the 2020-21 academic year and recommend competition resume when it is safe and appropriate to do so for all of its members. Additional information regarding plans for athletics in fall and spring will be communicated as soon as it becomes available."
More updates to follow.
