The Cal State East Bay community is mourning the loss of Dr. Al Mathews, a true Pioneer whose influence as a coach, educator, and administrator helped shape the university's athletics program for nearly three decades.
Al Mathews began his tenure at Cal State Hayward in 1963 as an assistant men's basketball coach. In 1964, he launched the university's baseball program and served as its head coach for nine seasons, compiling a record of 147–161. Under his leadership, the Pioneers captured back-to-back Far Western Conference titles in 1971 and 1972.
Multiple Pioneers Hall of Famers reflected on Dr. Mathews' legacy.
Rich Sherratt, Former Baseball Player - Pioneers Hall of Fame Class of 2002:
"Dr. Al Mathews was not only my baseball coach and teacher, but my close friend for over 50 years. He was an inspiration to many people – on campus and in life. His character, integrity and compassion made him the man we strive to emulate."
Marty Valdez, Former Sports Information Director – Pioneers Hall of Fame Class of 2022:
"Al was a true Pioneer respected by coaches, athletic staff and student-athletes. He was well-liked throughout the University and was a member of the Hayward Rotary Club where he promoted Pioneer Athletics. Many of his former baseball players kept in touch with Al. He touched many lives in the Pioneer community. There will never be another Al Mathews."
In 1971, Mathews became only the second athletic director in school history, succeeding Lew Comer. Over the next two decades, he guided the department through a period of remarkable success, overseeing six NCAA national championships, 64 conference titles, and numerous All-Americans.
Beyond athletics, Mathews was a dedicated faculty member in Kinesiology and Physical Education, earning full professorship and mentoring countless students. His commitment to both academics and athletics reflected his belief in developing well-rounded student-athletes.
In recognition of his contributions, Mathews was inducted into the Pioneers Hall of Fame in 1998. His legacy continues through the Alfred "Al" R. Mathews Scholarship in Baseball, to support student-athletes who excel on the field and in the classroom.
Dr. Al Mathews leaves behind a legacy of leadership, integrity, and passion for student success that will endure for generations.
On March 14th at noon, an opportunity to celebrate Al Mathews' life and legacy will take place on the Cal State East Bay campus in the South University Union's Multipurpose Room.
