MILES FOR MEALS DONATION PAGE
HAYWARD, Calif. — We all need a chance to challenge ourselves physically during these times spent mostly indoors.
Cal State East Bay men's basketball has created an opportunity to do so, while supporting a great cause.
CSUEB head coach
Bryan Rooney is set to lead "Miles for Meals," a challenge of running one mile every hour during a 24-hour period on April 30, beginning at 8 a.m.
All donations will go directly to the
Alameda County Community Food Bank to ensure food security throughout the county.
"Miles for Meals" promotes health and exercise while practicing social distancing and taking proper health measures. It will begin at 8 a.m. on Thursday, April 30., and last until 8 a.m. May 1.
For those participating in the run, participants can do the running challenge individually or break off in teams and rotate runners each hour.
Those interested can donate
here. There is no limit on number of participants or teams, and no minimum amount donation required.
Donations will also be accepted even if individuals choose not to run.
Rooney's idea originally derived from Marin County native Dan Curtaz, the Dean of Students at San Jose Middle School in Novato, Calif.
Curtaz used his love of
running to help raise money for families in need during the COVID-19 pandemic. He ran his first mile at 12 a.m. on April 11 and continued throughout the 24-hour period without sleeping.
"Our staff has talked a great deal about wanting to do something to help our community during this difficult time," said Rooney, who just completed his third season as Pioneers head coach. "When we learned of Dan Curtaz's efforts, we were immediately inspired by his unselfishness and drawn to continue the cause.
"Whether someone runs, donates or simply offers positive thoughts, we greatly appreciate the support. The Alameda County Community Food Bank, and food banks throughout the country, do tremendous work and we are honored to join this partnership."
