Road Warriors: Pioneers Advance With CCAA Quarterfinal Win Over San Bernardino, 70-68

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — The Pioneers have their booked their weekend reservation for La Jolla.

The Cal State East Bay men's basketball team defeated Cal State San Bernardino in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Quarterfinals Tuesday evening at Coussoulis Arena, 70-68. 

Friday's CCAA Semifinal is scheduled to tip off at 2:32 p.m. from RIMAC Arena, and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.

It's the second consecutive year CSUEB (17-12) will appear in the CCAA Tournament Semifinals, which will be hosted by Friday's opponent, No. 4-ranked UC San Diego. It's also the second-straight year the Pioneers will face the Tritons in the conference's round of four.

In addition, it's the second time in four days East Bay has defeated San Bernardino (21-8) on its home court.

Junior forward Zafir Williams made key plays in the game's final minutes and finished with 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while junior guard Nai Carlisle also scored 18 points to go with four rebounds and three assists.

Senior Ant Navarrete added 12 points with eight rebounds and senior Evan Wardlow scored eight.

Williams' offensive rebound and bucket inside while fouled put the Pioneers ahead by three, 69-66, with 58 seconds remaining. 

After two San Bernardino free throws sliced the lead to one, Williams stole an inbound pass with six seconds to play to help seal the victory. 

Cal State East Bay led by as many as seven in the second half, but found itself trailing, 64-62, after a 3-pointer by CSUSB's Tyrell Henderson with 3:31 to go. The Pioneers were behind by as many as eight in the first half and were down 36-34 at halftime.
