Freshmen Shine Bright as East Bay Men's Golf Claims Bay Area Invitational Crown

PLEASANTON, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay men's golf team opened their 2020 schedule by winning the Bay Area Invitational hosted by Holy Names at The Club Ruby Hills. The Pioneers ended the three-round tournament with a total score of 876 finishing just three strokes ahead of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) foe Chico State.
 
In total, East Bay has three golfers place inside the top 10 finishers. Freshman Ryan Hong lead the Pioneers with his first top-3 finish of his career as he finished tied for third as he began the opening two rounds shooting a 69 (-3) and 70 (-2) on the par 72 course. Hong finished the tournament with a 76 (+4) in the final round to lock in a share of the third place finish. He finished with a 215 overall for the tournament.
 
Fellow freshmen, Moses Greene and Fraser Owenson both notched their first top-10 finishes as Pioneers as they took home a share of ninth place. Greene got the tournament got the tournament started with a 74 (+2) in the first round before following up with a 68 (-4) and 78 (+7) in the last two rounds of the invitational to compile a 220 overall. Owenson started the competition by shooting a 76 (+4) before notching a 69 (-3) in the second round. He concluded the final round with a 75 (+2) to finish with a 220 and a share of ninth place with teammate Greene.
 
Joey Herrera turned in another solid performance for CSUEB as he finished the Bay Area Invitational with an overall score of 222 which was tied for 18th. Herrera kicked things off by shooting a 74 (+2) and 73 (+1) in the first two rounds. In his final round Herrera shot a 75 (+3) to help improve his final standing to 222 and a share of 18th place.
 
Max Murai finished with an overall score of 235 which was tied for 57th overall. Murai shot a 78 (+6) in the opening round before following up with an 80 (+8) and completed the final round by shooting a 77 (+5).
 
The Pioneers will look to ride the momentum of this tournament championship into the next time they take the course March 8-10 for the Notre Dame De Namur Invitational at Poppy Ridge Golf Course in Livermore.
