Senior Sendoff: Pioneers Top San Marcos in Home Finale, 73-68

HAYWARD, Calif. — The Cal State East Bay men's basketball team closed out its home season in style on Saturday, earning a 73-68 victory over Cal State San Marcos on Senior Day at Pioneer Gym.

With five seniors being honored before the game, it was junior Zafir Williams who had one of his best performances of the season in a key victory.

The forward from Long Beach scored 25 points with 10 rebounds and three 3-pointers, making 9-of-17 field goal attempts overall.

Junior guard Nai Carlisle added 12 points, while seniors Ant Navarrete (11 points, 10 rebounds), Evan Wardlow (11 points) and Trent Warren (8 points) all had memorable final games to end their home careers.

Saturday's contest went back-and-forth, with the Pioneers making key shots in the second half to win for the third time in the last four overall, and second-straight at home against CSUSM (12-15, 8-13).

One of the biggest shots of the game was Carlisle's three that put East Bay ahead 69-66 with 1:34 remaining. That followed a Williams jumper to tie it just moments earlier, and the junior forward essentially sealed the win with a bucket inside to make it 71-66 with 43 seconds to go.

CSUEB (15-11, 11-9 CCAA) has its sight set on a possible No. 5 seed in next month's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament, but there's still a lot to be decided.

The Pioneers are currently fifth in the conference standings, just ahead of Stanislaus State (15-11, 11-10) with road contests against two of the conference's top teams — Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino — looming next week.
