HAYWARD, Calif. — The Cal State East Bay softball team split its doubleheader against "Battle of the Bays" rival Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday afternoon at Pioneer Field.
CSUEB (6-11, 4-6 CCAA) won the first contest of the day, 3-2, behind another spectacular pitching performance from senior
Abby Greer. Junior
Anamaria Beard was just as good — if not better — in Game 2, but the Pioneers were edged by the Otters, 1-0.
CSUEB 3, CSUMB 2
Greer pitched a complete game — allowing two earned runs and striking out four — to earn her fourth victory inside the pitchers' circle, while junior
Maddie Ramirez crushed an RBI double to center to score the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth.
Senior
Jennifer Palmares went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored, while senior
Sarah Fukushima recorded two RBI.
Fukushima put the Pioneers on the scoreboard early with an RBI double to right that scored Palmares, and later knotted the score, 2-2, on a sacrifice fly in the fifth to score freshman
Sydney Littles.
Ramirez's RBI double later in the fifth scored Palmares, lifting CSUEB to its third-straight win.
CSUMB 1, CSUEB 0
Beard dazzled in the circle in Game 2 Friday evening, giving up just one earned run on five hits while striking out two in a narrow loss.
The contest was locked in a scoreless tie into the top of the seventh, as Monterey Bay put together three hits in the inning to push across the lone run of the game.
Senior
Emilie Portesi finished 2-for-3 with a stolen base, while Palmares racked up her fourth hit of the day in the third.
This weekend's "Battle of the Bays" series continues on Saturday afternoon, with first pitch of Game 1 set for 12 p.m.
