HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Pioneers captured a, 10-9 opening day victory in dramatic fashion over the visiting Menlo College Oaks Friday evening at Pioneer Baseball Field.

With the Pioneers trailing 8-9 in the bottom of the ninth inning, one out on the scoreboard and runners on second and third, freshman
Matthew Mandeville stepped up to the plate a forced a wild pitch from the Menlo pitcher that brought home
Jordan Macias and
Robert Lujan to give the Pioneers the win.

East Bay was productive in all phases of the game as they compiled nine hits and 14 total strikeouts. Every Pioneer pitcher that took the mound struck out the first batter they faced.

Ethan Brodsky got the start on the hill for the Pioneers and tossed four innings. The sophomore from Mission Viejo paced CSUEB with six strikeouts while only giving up three hits.
TJ Myers was next up out the bullpen for East Bay and racked up three fan outs in only one inning of work.

Freshmen
Tristin Tatum and
Shane Cancilla both saw their first career action as Pioneers. Tatum notched two strikeouts and Cancilla logged one strikeout of his own. Junior
Mark Woinarowicz (W, 1-0) garnered the win after retiring three consecutive Menlo batters including striking out two.

The Pioneers got the scoring started early as they chipped in three runs in the opening inning of play. In all, the Pioneers scored eight total runs through the first three innings highlighted by a three run home run by senior outfielder
Robert Lujan in the third inning. Lujan finished with three RBI and two runs scored.

Francisco Pedraza led the Pioneers with three hits and two stolen bases in the ball game. The junior from near by Alameda also notched two RBI and drew one walk.
AJ Curtis finished with two hits and two runs scored.
Kaleb Keelean,
Ryan McSwain and
Jordan Macias all scored two runs each and registered one hit for East Bay. Macias added two RBI.

The Pioneers will continue their series three game series against Menlo College Saturday with a road meeting at Cartan Field.
