ARCATA, Calif. — The Cal State East Bay men's basketball team overcame a double-digit deficit in the second half on Thursday evening to earn a road victory over Humboldt State, 85-74, at Lumberjack Arena.
Junior guard
Nai Carlisle exploded for a season-high 22 points along with eight rebounds and five assists, as CSUEB (11-8, 7-6 CCAA) finished the game on an 11-0 run to overcome a 12-point second-half deficit.Â
The Pioneers have won two-straight games, and now stands all alone in sixth place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings with a road contest against fifth-place Stanislaus State looming on Saturday.
Junior forward
Zafir Williams finished with 18 points and seven rebounds, while senior
Trent Warren scored 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from 3-point range.
In addition, junior forward
Josh Dhatt added 11 points with five rebounds, and senior guard
Evan Wardlow had nine points with five rebounds to round out the Pioneers' balanced attack.
Cal State East Bay fell behind in the game's opening minutes as Humboldt State (7-11, 3-10) raced out to an early 9-2 lead. The Pioneers fell behind by as many as 10 in the first half.
After trailing by six at halftime, a 3-pointer by the Lumberjacks' Leland Green made it 57-45 with 15:35 left to play.
But the Pioneers stayed close and eventually tied the score, 72-72 ,on Williams' bucket in the lane with 5:05 remaining.Â
Williams' jumper moments later put the Pios ahead by two, and Cal State East Bay held Humboldt State scoreless over the last 4:26 to leave with the road win.
CSUEB out rebounded HSU 35-30 and went 14-for-19 from the free throw line, while the Lumberjacks attempted only eight foul shots as a team.
Saturday's game at Stanislaus State is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
