JOPLIN, Mo. — The Cal State East Bay women's cross country team put forth an impressive performance on Saturday morning at the Missouri Southern Stampede hosted by Missouri Southern State.
The Pioneers took second overall in the 5K with 101 points, just one shy of first-place Missouri State (100). Cal State East Bay finished ahead of No. 18-ranked Missouri Southern (106), 20
th-ranked Dallas Baptist (224) as well as Pittsburgh State (164), which finished 13th nationally last season in 2018.
"I'm so proud of our women," said CSUEB head coach
Tony Nicolosi. "This is a veteran group and we took a huge risk coming out to this meet with a loaded field.
"We raced incredibly tough and didn't back down from the pressure. The exciting thing I take away from this is I don't think we raced even close to our best."
Sophomore
Angie Ronquillo finished ninth overall and scored eighth among collegiate athletes with a time of 17-minutes, 53.5-seconds. The time ranks 14th all-time in program history in a 5K event.
Claire Fisher scored 11th at 18:00.1,
Amanda Navarro crossed the finish line in 18:18.) to place 23rd, while
Andrea Romero 18:31.5) and Alondra Ortiz (18:32.8) earned 29th and 30th respectively.
The Pioneer women and men return to action next Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Capital Cross Challenge in Sacramento, Calif.Â
