East Bay Erases Dominguez Hills 11-6 in Series Finale

HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team took three out of four games from visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills this weekend after the Pioneers closed out the series with an 11-6 win in Sunday's finale.

Right-hander Dylan Dudley turned in his longest outing of the season to earn the victory, and the East Bay bats broke out for nine runs in the first two innings as the Pioneers took control early.

The win improves their overall record to 14-19 with an 11-16 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. The squad is currently three games out of a playoff spot with four series remaining -- all of which are against teams currently ahead of them.

After Dudley worked a 1-2-3 inning to open the game, the Pioneers hung five runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first. The first six batters all reached base -- five singles and an error -- and four of them scored before the Toros were able to record a single out.

CSUDH answered back with two runs off Dudley in the second, but the Pioneers quickly snatched momentum back with a four-run rally in the bottom of the frame. Kyosuke Ushimaru and Steve Robinson each tallied their second RBI single before the game had even reached the third inning.

The scoring settled down after that, and Dudley did an outstanding job pitching with a lead. He issued just one walk in his outing, and put up four straight zeroes on the scoreboard before the Toros finally pushed across two more runs in Dudley's final inning of work.

Freshman Ethan Brodsky followed him out of the bullpen for the eighth and recorded the final six outs to seal the CSUEB victory. Meanwhile, the Pioneers tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Ryan McSwain and yet another run-scoring single by Ushimaru.

East Bay totaled 11 hits in the win and also took advantage of five Dominguez Hills defensive errors. Ushimaru and McSwain both finished with three hits, while Robinson went 2-for-4.

The Pioneers have yet another home series up next as they welcome in San Francisco State for an important four-game set starting Friday, Apr. 12.
