POMONA, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team finished its Southern California road trip with a four-game split after Cal Poly Pomona defeated the Pioneers by a final score of 8-4 in Sunday's finale.
East Bay carried over its momentum from Saturday's doubleheader sweep and grabbed an early lead in the finale, but a five-run sixth inning from the Broncos spelled doom for CSUEB. The loss drops the Pioneers to 11-18 overall this season.
Pomona took an early lead on Sunday with a run in the bottom of the first off
Dylan Dudley. But the junior settled down after that and fired off five straight scoreless frames. Meanwhile, East Bay's offense went to work.
In the top of the fourth,
Kyosuke Ushimaru was hit by a pitch with one out.
Adam Hollar followed with an opposite-field single, continuing a red-hot weekend for the Pioneer senior. Hollar finished the series with 11 hits in 16 at bats. After a fly out,
Omar Sanchez ripped a two-out single up the middle to even the score at 1-1.
Two innings later, the Pioneers got singles by
Ryan Thomasy and
Dakota Conners to start things off. After a sacrifice bunt, the Broncos walked Hollar intentionally to load the bases.
Steve Robinson then came up with a big hit as the senior hooked a double into the right field corner to plate two runs. Sanchez followed with a sacrifice fly to put the Pioneers ahead 4-1.Â
Unfortunately, the lead was short-lived. Dudley ran into some trouble in the sixth, so head coach
Mike Cummins turned to senior
Jordan Milligan, who gave up two hits and a walk before being replaced by
Ethan Brodsky. The freshman allowed a sac fly and a two-run double before escaping the inning, and when the dust settled, Pomona had gone ahead 6-4.
The home team tacked on an insurance run in the seventh and another in the eighth, and the Pioneers were unable to mount another scoring rally as the finished with just seven hits.Â
Conners was the only CSUEB player with multiple hits, going 2-for-4. Hollar and Robinson each finished 1-for-3 and each drew a walk, but those were the only two free passes issued by Pomona pitching.
Next up, the Pioneers head out to Stockton Tuesday evening for an exhibition game against the Stockton Ports, the Class A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. They return home next weekend to host Cal State Dominguez Hills for a four-game series in Hayward.Â
