ALAMEDA, Calif. -- Cal State East Bay senior
Will Barnett captured his second individual tournament championship of the season this week at CSUEB's home event, the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout. He finished 10 strokes under par at Corica Park South Course thanks to an incredibly impressive 36-hole performance on Monday, leading the Pioneers to third place in the team standings.
Barnett was brilliant on the first day of the tournament, making 10 birdies in his first round and flirting with the course record before finishing with a 65 (-7), the lowest round by an East Bay player this season. The Australia native followed that up with a 68 (-4) Monday afternoon to take a seven-stroke lead into Tuesday's final round. He finished the week with a career-best total of 206 (-10) and held off a late charge by Chico State's Kelley Sullivan to win by three strokes.
Barnett has now claimed titles in two of CSUEB's last three tournaments. This week, he carried the Pioneers to the top of the team leaderboard after the first two rounds. They held a two-stroke lead over Sonoma State, but the Pioneers shot eight over par on Tuesday and Seawolves were the only team in the field under par as they stormed back to claim the team championship, finishing six strokes ahead of second-place Chico State. The Pioneers were three strokes behind them in third, notching a 54-hole total of 867 (+3).Â
This is the third straight top-three finish for East Bay in what has been a very strong 2018-19 season thus far. Despite missing out on the team title, they nonetheless notched head-to-head victories over Cal State Monterey Bay, Simon Fraser, and Stanislaus State, all of whom were ahead of the Pioneers in the Golfstat rankings coming into the week.
Individually,
Greg Smith turned in a consistent effort to place 13th for the Pioneers at two over par.
Jonathan Mulvany also notched a top-20 finish with strong performances in the first and third rounds.Â
Below are CSUEB's final individual scores. The team now has just two regular season tournaments remaining before CCAA Championships, starting in two weeks at the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational in Turlock, Calif.
