East Bay Men's Hoops Set to Host SF State, Sonoma State for Homecoming

HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Pioneer men's basketball program kick off Homecoming activities with a pair of league games against San Francisco State on Thursday and Sonoma State on Saturday.
 
East Bay is currently sitting in the top spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings with a 13-4 mark in conference play and an 18-5 overall record on the season.
 
Cal State East Bay narrowly swept through their road trip with close victories over Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills.
 
WEEK IN REVIEW
The Pioneer men's basketball program pulled off an enormous 83-73 overtime victory over Cal State L.A. on Thursday night, February 7 as they keep pace in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings.
 
Although the Pioneers were outscored 45-35 in the second half, East Bay locked down defensively as took a 13-3 advantage in the extra period to come away with the victory.
 
Junior forward Ant Navarrete (San Leandro, Calif.) notched his sixth double double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds, both team-high's for the game. Navarrete went 6-for-11 from the floor, knocking down his only three-point attempt while going 3-for-4 from the free throw line.
 
Sophomore guard Nai Carlisle (West Lafayette, Ind.) turned in an all-around great performance notching 13 points, six rebounds and five assists on a team best 39 minutes. Carlisle went 6-for-7 from the foul line and knocked down the dagger three-pointer to put CSUEB up six points with a minute to play in overtime.
 
Evan Wardlow (Lake View Terrance, Calif.) compiled 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists across 30 minutes. Wardlow was a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe while connecting on two three-point buckets.
 
Despite the East Bay bench being outscored 41-29 for the ball game, junior Trent Warren (Melbourne, Australia) was clutch down the stretch for the Pioneers. Warren all of his 12 points after the intermission with seven of those points coming in overtime while corralling a career best four steals. He was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field, including 2-for-2 from three-point range while going 4-for-5 from the foul line.
 
Senior point guard Juwan Anderson (Oakland, Calif.) tallied nine points, four assists and two rebounds before fouling out after only 19 minutes of action. Anderson was also perfect from both the field (3-for-3), three-point land (1-for-1) and the free throw line (2-for-2).
 
Senior point guard Juwan Anderson (Oakland, Calif.) sealed the Pioneer 74-72 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills with the game-winning shot on Saturday evening, February 9 in the Torodome.
Anderson finished the game with 12 points and seven assists on 4-for-7 shooting from the field. He also had four rebounds, a block and a steal through 33 minutes of action. Anderson knocked down two three-pointers and both of his foul shots.
 
East Bay shot over 52 percent for the ball game for the second consecutive contest while converting 44 percent of their three-pointers. Senior wing Evan Wardlow (Lake View Terrance, Calif.) compiled a team-high 20 points on 8-for-14 shooting accuracy from the field including 3-for-6 from long distance. Wardlow added four rebounds, three assists, and two steal on a team-high 35 minutes played.
 
The Pioneers bench played strong tonight as they outscored the home team reserves 22-2 for the outing. Redshirt freshman John Duff (Los Angeles, Calif.) returned to the Los Angeles area and led the CSUEB bench with 12 points on 5-for-6 shooting in 22 minutes. Duff added five rebounds and two blocks while sinking both his free throws.
 
Junior Ant Navarrete (San Leandro, Calif.) once again led the Pioneers with seven rebounds to go along with eight points, a steal and a block. Nai Carlisle (West Lafayette, Ind.) and Patrick Marr (Clayton, Calif.) both tallied six points each for CSUEB. Carlise chipped in two rebounds and two assists on 3-for-6 shooting while Marr had three bounds and a team-best four made free throws.
 
PIONEER POINTS
Sophomore Nai Carlisle and senior Evan Wardlow both joined the Pioneers this season as transfers from Division I schools, and both have been crucial additions -- particularly in conference play.
 
After reaching double digits just once in the first seven games of the season, Wardlow has now scored in double figures in 13 of the last 15 games, while averaging 5.4 rebounds per game during that span as well. Wardlow is scoring 12.9 points per game in CCAA play thus far, second best on the team and 13th in the league.
 
Carlisle is the seventh leading scorer in the CCAA during league games, averaging 13.8 points per game. The Indiana native has been incredibly efficient this season, shooting 52 percent from the field and 48 percent from three-point range.
 
Senior Juwan Anderson has another huge weekend just a week after being named CSUEB Player of the Week. Anderson entered the Pioneer record books as the all-time assist leader in program history, reaching a career total of 366 in less than three seasons to break the previous record of 349 that has stood since 2010. He is second in the conference in assists per game with 4.8 (105) and continues to rank third in assist-turnover ratio (2.8). He's also shooting 87.8 percent from the foul line, which is first in the league. Anderson has made 79 of 90 shots from the foul line this season.
 
Ant Navarrete is leading the Pioneers in rebounding and second in field goal percentage. Navarrete is sixth in the league with 7.1 rebounds per contest and third in the CCAA shooting 50 percent from the field. He is averaging 10.9 points per game after scoring in double figures in 11 of the last 15 games.
 
SCOUTING SAN FRANCISCO STATE
The San Francisco State Gators enter the Bay Bridge series against East Bay with a 14-7 mark on the season and a 10-6 record in league play after defeating Sonoma State in their lone game of the week. Jiday Ugbaja is leading the Gators with 13.0 points and 3.5 assists. Ryne Williams is adding 11.9 points and 6.9 rebounds per outing for SF State.
 
SCOUTING SONOMA STATE
The Sonoma State Seawolves come into the matchup with the Pioneers carrying a 7-14 overall record on the season with a 5-11 mark in league play after falling to San Francisco State in their only game played last week. Issac Davidson is leading the Seawolves with 15.0 points and 4.7 rebounds. Lewayne Grant is adding 9.9 points and 3.2 assists for Sonoma State.
