East Bay Women Top SF State, 75-55 for 7th Straight Win

SAN FRANCISCO – The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team secured a, 75-55 road victory in round one of the "Battle of the Bay Bridge" matchup against the San Francisco State Gators Saturday night.

The Pioneers have now won seven consecutive games as they improve to 8-2 overall on the season with a perfect 4-0 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action.

East Bay struggled out of the gate in this one, shooting just 15 percent as a team, including missing all four of their three-point attempts in the opening quarter of action. Despite the rough shooting, the Pioneers still managed to carry an 11-11 tie with the Gators into the second quarter. That would be the quarter in which CSUEB would take full control of the contest.

The Pioneers would go on outscore the Gators 21-8 for the second quarter as CSUEB held SFSU to just 23.3 percent shooting accuracy in the first half of play. East Bay finished the ball game out scoring SF State 43-36 in the second half, going up by as much as 24 before it was all said and done.

Morgan Greene paced the Pioneers with 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field in 30 minutes. Greene grabbed seven rebounds with two assists, a block and a steal while knocking down one of her two three-pointers. Faith Turner continued her dominate play inside with 15 points and a game high nine rebounds. Turner, who was coming off a career-high 23 point effort Thursday night, went 5-for-10 from the field, including a perfect 5-of-5 from the charity stripe while notching two steals.

Behind Greene and Tuner's strong inside presence East Bay was able to outscore SF State 38-24 inside the painted area. The Pios also held the rebounding advantage as they corralled 47 boards to just 37 from the Gators. Nearly half of the Pioneers rebounds came on the offensive end as they collected 21 total offensive rebounds that they converted into 18 second chance points.

The Pioneer defense suffocated the Gators, holding them to 36.5 percent shooting for the contest. The East Bay defensive pressure forced SF State into 25 total turnovers that the Pioneers turned into 22 points. The Pios also compiled 22 fast break points and received 24 points for their reserve players.

Madison Schiller finished with 11 points on 4-for-9 shooting to go along with five rebounds, two assists and three steals to lead the Pioneers. Zhane Duckett and Delia Moore led the East Bay bench with nine points each. Duckett chipped in three rebounds, two assists and a steal while going 5-for-6 from the foul line. Moore compiled three rebounds and two assists of her own. Blaysen Varnadoe turned in six points and grabbed seven rebounds in just 10 minutes for the Pioneers.

East Bay will return to action next week with a pair of home CCAA matches against San Bernardino and Humboldt State.
